Chatham’s Own: The Surfman and the Surfman’s Daughter

During a violent storm, most people hibernate in the safety of their homes. Not Ernest “Skipper” Eldredge (1874-1964) of Chatham. In his day, as part of a seven-man crew with the U.S. Life-Saving Service, he helped row a surfboat over mountainous ocean breakers to rescue crew and passengers on stranded or sinking ships. And he did that for 15 years.

Join author Rebecca Fadely Locklear from Orleans/Chatham as she shares background information about her two books: Exploring the U.S. Life-Saving Service 1878-1915 and The Surfman’s Daughter – Growing up in a Cape Cod village 1904-1929. Then absorb fascinating bits of information about the U.S. Life-Saving Service supported by photos and stories told by her great-grandfather Ernest Eldredge. Her presentation bursts with facts wrapped in true stories.
