I’m a 21-year-old college student who used the disruption in my college experience to acquire a 30-foot steel sailboat, restore it, and sail from Annapolis to Florida and back. While I grew up sailing everything from small racing dinghies to wooden gaff-rigged ketches, I never took the time to learn about the systems themselves that make cruising happen. I used the DIY process (with some trial and error) to teach myself about rust repair, engine installation, electrical, plumbing, rigging, and everything else that is essential for a full-time liveaboard cruiser. Through that process, I also learned about which aspects of DIY are much harder than they look, which are much easier than they look, and how to trust my own work when it’s put to the test.
