Speaker Series: Coast Guard Communications Today
Chatham Marconi Welcomes Sr. Chief Ross Comstock to its Speaker Series
Ever since the early days of radio, the US Coast Guard has relied on telecommunications capabilities to ensure safe and secure waterways, as well as providing a rapid means for deploying search and rescue assets. Similar to the use of 911, communications watch standers scattered around the country in the Coast Guard and other services such as the US Marine Corps and Air Force stand ready to answer the call. The Officer in Charge of Coast Guard Station Chatham will discuss the various ways today’s Coast Guard uses radio, how boaters can best leverage those capabilities in times of need, and what happens behind the scenes after an emergency call comes in as the Coast Guard and other first responders operate together.
About Our SpeakerSenior Chief Petty Officer Ross Comstock is a 2000 graduate of Sallisaw High School in Sallisaw, OK, where he enlisted in the Navy in September of 2000 and served as an Aviation Electronics Technician aboard the Nimitz-Class Aircraft Carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. He subsequently enlisted in the US Coast Guard in February of 2005. He assumed command of Coast Guard Station Chatham in May of 2022. His previous assignments included Officer in Charge of Station Chincoteague, VA; Executive Petty Officer of Station Portsmouth, VA; USCG Cutter DECISIVE; USCG Station Chincoteague, VA; USCG Station Port Aransas, TX; USCG Cutter BRANT; and USCG Station Oregon Inlet, NC.
BMCS Comstock’s awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, four Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and four Coast Guard Team Commendation Medals and multiple other personal and service awards. He has earned the Permanent Cutterman insignia, the Advanced Boat Forces Operations insignia, and the Officer in Charge Afloat and Ashore competencies.
A graduate of Class 236 of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Academy, he has attended various service related and leadership courses and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Emergency Management from Ashford University. In 2023, he earned his Private Pilot certification from the FAA.
As an active volunteer in the community, Senior Chief Comstock contributes to Amateur Radio Emergency Services and is a Certified Storm Spotter for NOAA’s SKYWARN program. He also serves as Cubmaster with Boy Scouts of America in Brewster.

About the Chatham Marconi Speaker Series
Programs are usually presented on on the first Thursday of each month from October through June, and on alternate Thursday evenings during the Summer. Subjects are drawn from the resources of the Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum, the Education Center's STEM programs, or member-suggested topics related to our mission.
