Speaker Series: The Role of Emergency Communications in the Coast Guard

Chatham Marconi Welcomes Capt. H.F. Baley, U.S.C.G. (retired) to its Speaker Series

Our speaker will review the history and origins of the U.S. Coast Guard especially as they relate to Massachusetts and Cape Cod, as well as the history and collection of the Coast Guard Heritage Museum located in the Old U.S. Custom House on Rt. 6A in Barnstable Village.  The program will highlight Coast Guard wireless communication history and today’s applications.  Artifacts, such as a WWII era "portable" emergency radio for life rafts, will be demonstrated.

About Our Speaker

Captain H.F. (Buck) Baley, U.S. Coast Guard (retired) lives on Cape Cod and is a volunteer at the Coast Guard Heritage Museum.  He has served as its vice-president for the past 10 years, and is a periodic lecturer on a variety of topics related to Coast Guard missions and history.

During his 26-year Coast Guard career, assignments included Deck Watch Officer aboard a Coast Guard Cutter conducting Ocean Station patrols in the North Atlantic, Coast Guard Liaison to the USAF Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service (ARRS), and Coast Guard Liaison to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).   The bulk of his tours, however, were as a rescue helicopter pilot and included tours in San Diego, California; Kodiak, Alaska and two tours on Cape Cod.  After retiring from the Coast Guard, Buck worked as an Information Technology Specialist and Project Manager for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).  He is a 1972 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy.
