Tuesday Talks: Richard Ryder: Cape Cod Coast Guardsmen and the 1937 Midwest Flood

Join us on Tuesday, January 14^th, for our first “Tuesday Talks” lecture of 2025. Richard Ryder, an esteemed author, historian, and retired Lieutenant Commander of the U.S. Navy Medical Department, will regale us with tales of the U.S. Life Saving Service and the early Coast Guard. An expert in a topic that started as a self-proclaimed hobby, Richard will tell us all about the Cape Cod Coast Guardsmen and the great, Midwest Flood of 1937.
 
The lecture begins at 5pm and is held in the Mural Barn at the Atwood Museum located at 347 Stage Harbor Road in Chatham. Tickets are FREE for members and $10 for non-members. Please register online at chathamhistoricalsociety.org to reserve your seat.
 
Bio:
Richard was born in Cape Cod Hospital and graduated from Chatham High School in 1957. After high school, he graduated from the Stockbridge School at UMASS and Cornell University. He spent 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy Medical Department and retired as a LCDR, Medical Service Corps after having served for 8 years as a Hospital Corpsman. In his childhood, he spent time around the Fish Pier and has always been interested in things along the shores of Chatham. He has written two books about the Old Harbor Station which used to be on North Beach. His favorite hobby is learning about the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the early Coast Guard. Richard currently lives in Eastham with his wife Patricia.
